'Tapestries for Life' in Clifden Library

The development of of St Joseph’s Court, Clifden, has led to very positive outcomes for the residents and has helped to reduce the Galway County Council housing waiting lists in the elderly and special needs categories over the past ten years.
St. Joseph’s Court is a popular housing option for many elderly people wishing to move closer to the facilities of Clifden town. This enables greater participation in the local community, which may not be an option in more isolated rural areas.
There has been excellent communication and co-operation between the management and staff of Galway County Council and Clúid Housing from the outset. We look forward to continued collaboration with Clúid Housing at this and other locations throughout the county in the future.

'The Garden Awakening: Designs To Nurture Our Land and Ourselves' Free talk in Ballybane Library

As part of the book tour to celebrate the release of her new book 'The Garden Awakening: Designs To Nurture Our Land and Ourselves' Mary will visit Ballybane Library for a talk and a Question & Answers session on Friday April 15th at 2.30pm.

Mary Reynolds is a Chelsea flower show award-winning gardener and author. By listening carefully to her client and the land in question, Mary undertakes the design of gardens that marry the needs and wishes of the land's guardian with the needs and wishes of the land itself. With her roots in permaculture theory, Mary seeks to create spaces that are healing, truthful and magical.

On Thursday 7th April between 6-8 pm in Galway City Library the Liam and Tom O'Flaherty society will host a lecture on Roger Casement and Galway in 1916 to be presented by Angus Mitchell, the foremost authority on Casement.
Angus Mitchell, who was born in Africa and educated in England, has lived for over two decades in Ireland, where he has studied the life and legacy of Roger Casement and a group of associated radicals, pacifists, feminists, cosmopolitan nationalists, internationalists and other critics of empire. To date, his published research has focused largely on Roger Casement's work in Africa and South America.

Ballybane Library 1916 Exhibition

Ballybane Library is hosting an exhibition of books and articles for adults and children relating to the 1916 rising.
Of particular interest are accounts of local women's involvement.
The exhibition will run until May 12th.

Our lecture series continues this Tuesday, 5th of April in Tuam Library at 8 pm. The Society is delighted to welcome Treasurer, Martin O'Donoghue for his talk examining Tuam and district in 1916.

Reflecting on the events of Easter week 1916, the Tuam Herald reported that ‘in Tuam and district there has been no disturbance’ and that apart from the disruption to postal and rail services, the town remained true to Thackreray’s ‘caustic description of a nigh a hundred years ago – “the little humdrum town of Tuam”’. This lecture seeks to assess how accurate such a description was by providing an overview of the small, though committed, advanced nationalist movements in Tuam from the turn of the century. Efforts to mobilise Volunteers in the Tuam area are set against this background and local reactions to the Rising are scrutinised. Although Tuam did not rise in 1916, the town was also fairly typical in transferring support to the revitalised Sinn Féin by the time of the 1918 election. This lecture will reflect on this change as well as considering events in Tuam in comparison with events in other parts of the county

Brave Iranian filmmaker offers fare look at Tehran.

A timely reminder that a country is not its regime but its people, this daring cinematic project follows dissident Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi as he drives around Tehran in a taxi. In real life, Panahi faces a state-ordered, 20-year ban on filmmaking, and he seems to be trying out a second career as a cabbie. He’s not very good, as several of his fares point out, being a lousy driver with no sense of direction.
