The Music Club, a group of local musicians and teachers, host a free concert of primarily classical music in Loughrea library on the first Sunday of the month. All are welcome, especially music students. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal. The concert starts promptly at 7.00pmand usually concludes at approximately 8.30pm.
Past guest performers have included
the Loughrea Cathedral and Abbey adult choirs and theGalway Bass Trio. Broadcaster and author Liam Nolan has also given readings. Please check with the library to ensure that the concert is scheduled for a given month, as occasionally the group hosts a concert in another location.
The next concert will take place on Sunday 2nd May at 7.00pm

The connection between 23 April and books was first made in 1923 by booksellers in Spain as a way to honour the author Miguel de Cervantes who died on that day. This became a part of the celebrations of the Saint George's Day (also 23 April) in Catalonia, where it has been traditional since the medieval era for men to give roses to their lovers and since 1925 for the woman to give a book in exchange. Half the yearly sales of books in Catalonia are at this time with over 400,000 sold and exchanged for over 4 million roses.
In 1995, UNESCO decided that the World Book and Copyright Day would be celebrated on this date because of the Catalonian festival and because the date is also the anniversary of the birth and death of William Shakespeare, the death of Miguel de Cervantes, Inca Garcilaso de la Vega and Josep Pla, the birth of Maurice Druon, Vladimir Nabokov, Manuel Mejía Vallejoand Halldór Laxness.
It was a natural choice for UNESCO's General Conference, held in Paris in 1995, to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone, and in particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and gain a renewed respect for the irreplaceable contributions of those who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity. In this respect, UNESCO created both the World Book and Copyright Day and the UNESCO Prize for Children's and Young People's Literature in the Service of Tolerance
The shortlist of 8 titles was selected from a total of 156 novels nominated by 163 public library systems in 123 cities worldwide and includes Netherland by Irish author Joseph O’Neill. The International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award is the world’s most prestigious literary prize nominated by public libraries world-wide.
The titles were nominated by nominated by public libraries in Ireland, Austria, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Poland, Russia, The Netherlands, South Africa, Brazil, the USA and Canada.
Once again an Irish title has been shortlisted, proof, if it were needed, that Irish contemporary fiction can hold its own on the worldwide stage. John Banville, Sebastian Barry, Ronan Bennett, Michael Collins, Patrick McCabe, Colum McCann and John McGahern have all been shortlisted since 1996. Colm Toibín has been shortlisted twice, and was the winner in 2006 for The Master.

The 25th Cúirt International Festival of Literature will take place in Galway from April 20th to 25th. The stimulating programme will combine poetry, prose, memoir, debate and film with many of the world’s most accomplished writers visiting Galway to read from their work.
This 25th edition of Cúirt will cast a look back at the past with an evocative exhibition of recordings and images from the festival’s rich history. This past year has also been an exceptional time for Irish literature on the world stage and we are delighted to reflect that in the programme. At this year’s festival, Colum McCann will give his first reading in Ireland since his National Book Award win for Let the Great World Spin.
The festival mix of established writers alongside emerging voices will ensure a treasure chest of discovery for its audience. Younger readers are also catered for and the friendly backdrop of Galway makes for a warm and convivial host. Community, social and voluntary groups from around Galway are being invited to take part in a project that will allow them make their own documentary.
The ID Projects aims to document a broad range of issues and subjects in society today by empowering groups to tell their own stories. The Galway Film Centre will give professional advice and support to four groups, two from the city and two from the county, throughout the entire production process free of charge. The groups then tell their own stories based on the common theme of identity.
The film centre, the Arts Council, and the Galway county and city councils will hold a free information evening in the Westside Library, Tuesday March 30 at 6pm and in ED Direct/Ballinasloe Library, Wednesday March 31 at 4pm.
Sustainable Energy Week takes place at Europe Direct Ballinasloe/Ballinasloe Library from March 22nd-26th.

Energy is one of the present Commission’s priorities for the 2009-2012 period and during the week,information will be available on the various forms of sustainable energy in brochures,pamphlets ect.,at the ED Centre.We invite the public to visit and bring information with them and also to view an extensive selection of new books on the various forms of energy which are now available at the library.

The East Galway Art Trail is in its third year and this year will see it host artists Emily Rainsford-Ryan, Fiona Moore, Tommy Campbell, Christine Courtney and Ciarán Coghlan. The East Galway Art Trail is an innovative idea, concerned with both art and library awareness. In this European Year of Combating Social Exclusion, its objective is to bring art and the artist into the wider communities by using the facilities available in rural libraries as focal points and points of interaction. These artists are working and living within local communities. Hence, by bringing both the artist and the libraries together, smaller communities can benefit from and be exposed to the enjoyment of art and engage with their library’s facilities, at the same time. The Art Trail aims to expose the wider community to art, in its various forms. That is the intention that the staff at Europe Direct Ballinasloe / Ballinasloe Library and Galway County Library staff, who are based in the East Galway area and Joyce Little, a local Ballinasloe artist had when they worked together to bring this project to fruition.
Portumna Library had quite a busy but entertaining week of activities. Monday night saw the launch of the local art exhibition with the background choir of OMNA singers to really enhance the evening. Also present was Noelle Hayes who runs the local writing group Portumna Pen Pushers. Joining the wonderful art on display was their contribution of Poem of the Month, which will be on permanent display in the library. It was a wonderful evening with guests enjoying a cheese and wine reception and on hand as usual was the ever-obliging Jim Hynes to take photos. Wednesday evening was another creative night with Hayley Alduous giving a demonstration on crochet and if you managed to follow her instructions you ended the evening with a beautiful crocheted flower. It was an enjoyable and educational evening.
Many visitors called in later in the week to view the art and were very impressed with the amount of talent on display. It was another successful Library Ireland Week in Portumna and many enjoyed it.

After the official opening he made his way across the road to the library. He was introduced to the library facilities and he spent some time speaking with the Ballybane Library staff about the services which they provide to the local community.
Staff in both the Westside and Ballybane libraries work closely with the community gardai who are assigned to these areas.

The One Book, One Tuam project promotes reading, literacy, library use, and community building by motivating large groups of people to read an annual featured selection. The book chosen for this year is ‘Cirque du freak’ by Darren Shan.
A large group of adults and children attended the launch. Leo Moran from ‘The Sawdoctors’ officially launched the initiative. Mayor of Tuam, Tom Reilly attended and spoke at the launch. He spoke about the 
importance of reading skills and the effect that reading and the library have on the community.
Children from all the primary and secondary schools in Tuam are involved in the project. A range of workshops will be held in the library for children and adults including creative writing, circus skills, drama and dance. This initiative is community based and is aimed to develop and enhance literacy skills for both the young and old.
