On Tuesday March 31st at 6.00pm His Excellency Dr. Gints Apals will launch an exhibition entitled
'The Latvian Tragedy, 1941' , as part of the Latvian Presidency of the European Union.
The exhibition was prepared by
Museum of the Occupation of Latvia in collaboration with the Museum
"Jews in Latvia". Latvia, along with Estonia and Lithuania, had the
terrible misfortune of experiencing two occupations
in 1941. Each regime, while their ideological facades may have
differed, committed political repressions, grave acts of persecution and
genocidal atrocities.
The occupying power of the
Soviet Union repressed and killed the citizens of Latvia and on June 14,
1941, sent approximately 15000 people to Siberia. Less than two weeks
later, Nazi Germany occupied Latvia and subsequently
destroyed almost entirely the Latvian Jewish community, murdering
approximately 70,000 innocent people in that one year.
The exhibition will be on
display until April 20th and all are welcome to the launch. Mayor of
Galway, Councillor Mary Hoade will be in attendance and refreshments
will be served.
